Preface

Audience

This guide provides tutorial and reference information for users of the Load Sharing Facility (LSF) software. This guide is intended for end users of LSF and programmers who wish to create programs that use LSF features. Users should be familiar with executing commands in a UNIX or Windows NT environment.

LSF administrators should be familiar with the contents of this guide, along with the LSF Administrator's Guide.

Using This Guide

The first two chapters are an introduction to load sharing and LSF. Chapter 1 is an overview of the architecture and features of LSF. The information presented here is theory and background; you can skip this chapter if you are not interested. Chapter 2 shows you how to use the basic LSF features. If you have never used LSF before, this is the best place to start. The remaining chapters give more detailed descriptions of all LSF features and programs. These chapters are organized to be independent of each other; you only need to read those that cover topics of interest to you.

Chapter 3 describes the commands that allow you to examine the various attributes of the cluster.

Chapter 4 explains how LSF describes host resources and how resource requirement expressions can be used to select appropriate hosts.

Chapters 5 through 7 describe the LSF Batch system.

Chapter 8 describes interactive load sharing, while chapter 9 describes lstcsh, the load sharing command shell and chapter 10 describes lsmake, the load sharing parallel make.

Chapter 11 discusses checkpointing. Chapter 12 describes customizing LSF Batch. Chapter 13 describes LSF MultiCluster. Chapter 14 describes how LSF Batch operates with NQS.

Appendix A describes how to modify the xlsbatch menus while appendix B describes the new features of LSF version 3.0.

The on-line manual pages contain detailed descriptions of all LSF commands, daemons, functions and configuration files. The lsfintro(1), lsbatch(1), lim(8), res(8), and mbatchd(8) manual pages include references to all other LSF-related manual pages.

The xlsmon, xlsbatch, and xlsadmin graphical user interface applications are documented with the on-line help available through the Help menu of each application.
